In the Scotland of my childhood there was a very simple equation. Sugar = Love
I’ve been trying to shake it’s effects for years, but have recently been helped by a great book called “Licking The Sugar Habit”
As with all good addictions you have to be seriously invested in the process, or there no real point. Willpower is king of this territory…
Before we go on to the book, I’d like to offer a little background…
My sugar habits, intertwined with chocoholism, have always worried me. I suspected that there must be a chemical or emotional reason for this behaviour. I went looking for both! Qigong and meditation certainly balance the emotions well, but a craving is very difficult to beat! I researched Candidasis (An overgrowth of Candida bacteria in the gut.) It sounded right..
Ultimately I decided to invest £130 in a full spectrum bacteria test of my alimentary canal. It’s not as bad as it sounds, just pop some poop in a test tube, send a saliva test, and get a report back!
Turns out my Candida levels were if anything slightly low, and some other critical areas of bacteria were also missing – I eat pretty well, but it just shows how much is absent from the average diet these days.
I was put on a few different Pro-biotic supplements, which repopulated the gut, and make the absorption of mineral and vitamins work better. This was the first great step towards breaking my addiction!
I was lucky that this co-coincided with three weeks in China, where they hardly eat sugar at all (Or at least that was the case on my retreat!) It was a great opportunity to go “Cold-turkey!”
Lastly, I was given huge resolve, by reading [amazon-product type=”text” text=”Lick The Sugar Habit”]089529768X[/amazon-product]
For me there nothing like SCIENCE to help my brain face a problem like my Sugar Addiction!
I thought it might be of interest to my readers to hear an extract from the epilogue of this excellent book.
Nancy Appleton PHd write’s ” so you have seen in this book how you your health can be jeopardised by eating excess sugar, and by upsetting your body chemistry through stress and other bad habits. To summarise the chain of events: When the body is abused, its minerals become deficient.
Since enzymes are dependent on minerals to function, they do not function optimally. This in turn causes incomplete digestion of food. Undigested food gets into the blood stream. The cells cannot get the nutrients they need from the food in undigested form. As a result, our immune system must come to our defence and escort this foreign protein (the undigested food) out of the body. The immune system, which was not meant to do this continually, becomes exhausted, The exhaustion of the immune system is the beginning of the degenerative disease process, which depending on one’s genetic blueprint, results in diseases or conditions such as arthritis and cancer.”
This book really rang a bell for me, I’m now able to refuse cakes, sweets and biscuits without a second thought, and am easily and slowly shedding the pounds!
Fingers crossed for the future!
